Almost 20 years after the first meeting of what would become the “Chiesa evangelica battista della zona Flegrea” (transl. Evangelical Baptist Church of the Flegrean Fields), “Il Faro International Baptist Church” was about to become one church from people of two languages and multiple cultures.
It was December 2006 and while this Italian church had been growing in number and maturity, a nearby English-speaking church was in decline. The International Baptist Church (started as Calvary Baptist Church around 1977) was facing a downward turn in the church’s development. At that point, the leaders of the two churches decided that the IBC would join the Italian church and become one church called “Il Faro” which means “the lighthouse.”
For three months in 2007, services were held at 9:00 a.m. in English and 11:00 a.m. in Italian, but a strong desire for unity created the need for a multi-lingual service. At first, the worship time was shared and then each group would split to hear the sermon in its own language. By September of 2007, translation abilities had improved to the point where the entire service could be experienced together. Doing everything together continues to this day.
Looking to the future, Il Faro continues to prepare and entrust leadership to those who grow in maturity and leadership within the church. Small groups provide the means for discipleship and multiplication. Additionally, there is a full range of courses through church-based training. The future expansion of the church will continue on the strong foundation laid since Tim and Marcia Monahan launched it on May 1, 1988.
